Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information Lishan's Utility ("we", "the site") handles, and what choices you have. The short version: the tools work on your device, we do not ask you to create an account, and the content you type or upload stays in your browser.
Files and text you use in the tools
CVs, PDFs, photos, letters, notes and other content you open in the tools are processed by code running in your own browser. They are not sent to our server. Downloads are created on your device.
Information saved in your browser
Some tools remember your work and preferences, such as memos, flashcards, budget items, theme choice and draft text, using your browser's local storage. This data stays on your device. You can remove it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser settings, or by using the Clear buttons in each tool.
Online features
- Tech Guides online search: when you search for a solution, your search words are sent directly from your browser to public services such as Stack Exchange, Wikipedia and Hacker News (Algolia) to fetch results. Those services have their own privacy policies.
- Fonts and code libraries: the site loads fonts from Google Fonts and open-source code libraries from public content networks (cdnjs and jsDelivr). Like any website, these services receive your IP address and browser details when files are downloaded.
- Watch, Listen & Relax: classic movies stream from the Internet Archive, radio station lists come from the Radio Browser directory and the audio from each station's own server, and videos you load play through YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode. These services receive the requests your browser makes to them. Anime and manga information comes from the Jikan API (MyAnimeList data), and free anime episodes play from the official YouTube channels of licensed distributors. Recipes in the Food library come from TheMealDB, and recipe photos load from Wikimedia Commons (Wikipedia), credited on each recipe. Soothing sounds and the breathing guide run entirely on your device.
- Mental health: your mood check-ins, notes, self-check answers and scores, saved plan and journal entries are stored only on your device and are never sent to us. If you choose "Talk to Lishan", the message you send goes to Google Gemini like any other chat message.
- Languages translator: the word or sentence you type is sent to our server, which asks Google Gemini (or, if that's unavailable, the free MyMemory translation service and the Tatoeba sentence library) for a translation and example sentences. Results are cached on our server without anything that identifies you. Your saved words and translation history stay only on your device.
- Jokes: when you ask for a fresh joke, our server may ask Google Gemini to write a new batch of clean jokes (nothing about you is sent), and some jokes come from the free joke sites icanhazdadjoke.com and JokeAPI, loaded directly by your browser. Which jokes you've seen is remembered only on your device.
- Music: song lists and 30-second previews come from Deezer through our server, and full songs play from official YouTube videos in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. When YouTube's daily limit is reached, full songs may instead stream from Audius, a free platform where independent artists share their own music. Songs you like and play are saved only in your browser.
- Guide photos and videos: photos in Remedy, Hygiene, Fitness and Tech guides load from Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, credited under each photo. Video tutorials load from YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode only when you tap "Watch a video tutorial".
- Feedback form: when you send feedback, your rating, message, the tool it's about and, if you choose, your email address and browser details are emailed to us and kept in a private file on our server so we can improve the site. Feedback written while you're offline waits in your browser and is sent when you reconnect.
- Lishan chat assistant: when you send a message to Lishan, the chat bubble on the site, the message and the recent conversation are sent through our server to Google Gemini to write a reply. Google may use messages sent through the free Gemini API to improve its products, so please don't share private details such as passwords, ID numbers or bank details in the chat. We don't keep your chat on our server; we only count messages per day, using a scrambled code made from your connection's address, to prevent abuse. Your chat history is saved only in your browser and you can clear it with the New chat button. Simple requests like unit conversions, math and CV checks are answered on your device without being sent anywhere.
- What's On: movie and TV information, posters and trailers come from The Movie Database (TMDB) through our server, streaming availability from JustWatch via TMDB, and TV listings from TVmaze. Trailers, live news and free full movies play through YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode; our server reads the public video lists of the studios' official channels.
- Trivia game: questions are loaded from the Open Trivia Database.
- Contact form: if you send us a message, we receive the name, email address and message you enter, and use them only to reply to you.
