- Warm up for 5 to 10 minutes on a treadmill or bike, then do 1 light set before your working sets.
- Form first. Use a weight you can control for every rep. Ego lifting causes injuries.
- Progress slowly. When the last 2 reps of every set feel easy, add the smallest weight step next time.
- Rest 60 to 90 seconds between sets for muscle, 2 to 3 minutes for heavy strength sets.
- Recover. Train each muscle about twice a week, sleep 7 to 9 hours and eat enough protein.
- Ask for help. Gym staff can show you how machines work and set the seat height for you. Use a spotter for heavy bench presses and squats.
- Gym manners: wipe equipment after use, re-rack your weights and share machines between sets.
Stop if you feel sharp pain, dizziness or chest pain. If you have a health condition, check with a doctor before lifting.

Someone collapses and isn't breathing normally
- Call 911 and put the phone on speaker.
- Push hard and fast in the center of the chest, about 100 to 120 times a minute, until help arrives.
- Use an AED if one is nearby. It talks you through each step.
Choking adult who can't speak or cough
- Give 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades.
- Then 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich). Repeat until it clears.
- If they become unresponsive, call 911 and start chest compressions.
